What Are This Year’s Fall Fashion Trends?

  • Animal prints: Welcome to the jungle, baby. Animal prints of all stripes and spots are a welcome addition to any fall wardrobe. Try a zebra motif like those of Bottega Veneta. Wear your rock influences like the leopard looks of Ovadia and Sons on your sleeves. Visually roar while wearing Versace tiger stripes. If you’re not ready for all that color and still want to experiment with the trend, ease into a snakeskin pattern from pants to jackets or boots.
  • Color-blocking:  A great way to punch up your go-to jeans is with a color-blocked button-up shirt or hoodie. The style has been seen on the runways of American icons Alexander Wang and Tommy Hilfiger, as well as indie designer Engineered Garments, which should inspire you to embrace this bolder 90s throwback look.

  • Corduroy wide wales: Corduroy is usually a trend associated with a crunchy hippie vibe. This time around it’s all about a wide wale. Consider the sleek luxury of Berluti, the rock and roll insouciant attitude of Faith Connexion or newbie designer Deveaux’s turned-out slouchy coats.

  • High shine: It could be that we’re living in a tech-based world where our clothing is starting to resemble machines. From patent leather jackets to sharkskin suits to plastic overlays — no item is exempt from a sheen of gloss. Raf Simons experimented with sleek surfaces at his namesake and at CK205. Edgier designers like Acne Studios & Maison Margiela went all over, and even classic houses like Hermès and Berluti have joined the party.

  • Plaid: Think of this more as a resurgence of that tried-and-true pattern than a rehash of grandad’s boring plaid. This staid pattern has showed up in every iteration for fall. The buffalo-red design was spotted at Todd Snyder and Sacai, and its cousin in the bold yellow version was seen in the sportier spectrum at Alexander Wang. Now’s the time to break out that classic Burberry.
  • Patchwork: There’s this Frankenstein effect happening in fashion this season and it’s resurrecting deadstock denim. You won’t have to compromise your style by giving up that sweater with the holes in the elbows or the jeans with no knees. Those afraid to re-work their own wardrobe can go get a Vetements’ hoodie or the parkas from Sacai. Versace also has a mash up of prints and fabrics, with overcoats that can cover any fashion itch you’re trying to scratch.

  • Yellow/Red/Orange: Your fall/winter wardrobe will be on high alert.  Colors like fire engine red, emergency orange and every shade of yellow will pop up everywhere. Stop traffic in a head-to-toe look like the ones shown at Off-White, use the element of surprise with layered pieces from Louis Vuitton or skip the winter doldrums by getting a coat from Kenzo. Whatever you do, don’t mix yellow and red unless you want everyone around you to suddenly crave golden arches.

Oversized Proportions

Go big or go home. Several designers have hopped on this trend. We’re even seeing classic houses like Hermès adopting baggier shapes with abstract knit sweaters and longer shirts peeking out from underneath. Get rid of the skinny jeans and favor a looser fit.

You’ll want to play with proportions. Try an all-over, oversized extreme like the draped overcoats and trouser at Yohji Yamamoto, plus the boxy leather jackets and long shorts at Prada. You can also ease your way into this style by keeping it cool with relaxed shapes like the ones shown at Billy Reid & Visvim. When wearing an oversized sweater or jacket, wear light layers underneath to keep the outfit from bulking up.

Americana / Country Western

Giddy up, cowboy. You can take the country-western look and max it your own with embroidery and fringe ala Dries van Noten or keep it subtle and modern with a minimalistic shirt from CK205. Dust off any cowboy boots that are being ignored in the back of your closet, maybe even consider hitting up a vintage shop to invest in a pair. Play with boot-cut denim or channel your inner man-in-black with dark sunglasses and some leather like the styles popularized at Coach 1941.

Loungewear

This fall, the ‘Dude’ abides. Become a Lebowski by rocking your pajamas to the grocery store and even the office. Wear long sweaters and coats as casually one would a robe like the options seen on the runways of Todd Snyder and Bottega Veneta. Feel free to take up the Hugh Hefner throne while you’re at it with a swanky Alexander McQueen version. For a casual vibe, wear some pajama pants with an oversized sweater for the ultimate slacker style or check out Alexander Wang for any scholastic interpretations.

Jock-Collegiate

It wouldn’t be autumn without a few back-to-school references. Rag + Bone always manages to elevate common sweatpants into something more than your basic Sunday couch-potato look. Try pairing classic heather grey pants with fresh white kicks and an oversized chunky knit, plus a duffle coat for an effortlessly casual weekend look.

Football fanboys looking to keep their team spirit and stay fashion forward can borrow cues from Kim Jones’s final show at Louis Vuitton by wearing a turtleneck under that (insert team name here) jersey. Todd Snyder also has the perfect combo of jogger pants in classic suiting fabrics, so you don’t have to choose cliques. A way to ease in to this trend is by picking up a collegiate-style scarf. Lots of brands are selling them as merch right now. You can consider going the upscale route as well with a Versace version.

Florals

Unsure of how to wear florals without looking like you took a tumble in grandma’s garden? Tone it down with dark prints like the versions shown at Death to Tennis, which are absolutely fresh to death. An unexpected all-over hibiscus print was shown at Y-3 that is a new take on a camo jacket without any of the expected Magnum PI Hawaiian shirt tropes usually referenced to that tropical flower. If flower power is your motto in life, you’ll love the intricately delicate embroidery present on the turtlenecks and polos offered at Kenzo. For an absolutely bold take, try the oversized roses on suits and overcoats at Alexander Queen paired with black-on-black shirts and sneakers.

Cartoons / Comics

Ever get jealous of the geek apparel your nephews sport? That all changes now. Cartoon characters and comic prints were popular on the runway this year. It’s an easy style to incorporate into your closet, as anyone can walk into a vintage shop for a classic sweatshirt or pick up the knit sweaters shown at CK205, which highlight abstract Roadrunners and Coyotes.

The summer blockbuster season might be over, but you’ll still want to rep your favorite superhero the right way. Comme des Garçon Homme Plus made suits, shirts and jacket printed with vintage Superman comics. Tone this down by pairing this one piece with dark jeans and a plain shirt. Anime more your taste? Pair a big-eyed beauty on a Gucci sweater with a classic button-down to be a real page turner.

Cargo Pants

They’re back, and don’t worry, as the modern iteration of this 90s classic trend won’t leave you looking like you’ve got a storage locker around your thighs. If you’re a minimalist, yet require the extra storage to hold your iPhone, try a slim pair from Raf Simons. For something more contemporary, keep the boxy silhouette look of Prada’s leather pants in mind. Junya Watanabe maintains a clean utilitarian style, but also adds some emergency striping that manifests the outdoorsy apocalypse mood. Look at Vetements offerings if camo-cargo is your thing.

Balaclavas

Finally, a style of headwear for the perennially-shy type. Balaclavas were seen in all types of iterations this season, so look to make a bold statement when sporting one this autumn. No one will know it’s you anyway. Gucci made an inventive knit two-piece style that makes drinking coffee on the go more convenient. Maison Margiela’s clear and colorful PVC toppers will come in handy on that first day of snow, trapping heat and keeping your hair dry. CK205 has also put out the most versatile version in a variety of knitted patterns that look great with your warmest overcoat or flashiest puffers. Just make sure to never pop into a bank wearing an all-black one you purchased from the street stand.
