Whereas summer is a great time for low-cut canvas kicks such as Vans or Chuck Taylors, fall is the season in which you should be aiming for higher cuts and chunkier builds. It’s also the beginning of basketball season, which brings with it an exciting new array of signature sneakers that look just as great off the court as they do on.
From an exciting new take on the classic white sneakers to one of the most-hyped collaborations of the year, these are the sneakers that can take your wardrobe to another level this fall.
Adidas Liberty Cup
You probably don’t need to be told that every man’s closet should have a pair of clean, classic white sneakers in it. It’s a staple that works regardless of season — white goes with just about everything and if they’re designed well, white sneakers will always look good. That said, a pair of white sneakers can also be … bland, let’s say. After all, a sneaker style so essential and so widely-utilized can only be so interesting, right? As it turns out, that’s not the case with the adidas Liberty Cup.
Adidas’s skateboarding department has been doing great work throughout 2019 from their stellar footwear/apparel collaboration with Alltimers to the reveal of pro skater Tyshawn Jones’ first signature shoe (one that’s worth picking up even if you’ve never stepped on a board). The centerpiece of their Fall lineup has got to be the Liberty Cup.
For this sneaker, designers took note from classic tennis style of the ‘90s and blended it with modern skate fashion. The result is a clean silhouette that blends shades of white and cream with unique textures. It’s a super unique pair of sneakers that can blend in just as well as they can stand out.
Nike Air Max 270 React
Chunky shoes have been all the rage for a while now but Nike really took it to the extreme (in the best way) when they released the Nike Air Max 270 React earlier this year. Already available in a variety of colors, the sneaker melds the chunky, maximalist style of the previously-released Air Max 270 — complete with that trademark visible air bubble — with the company’s signature React foam.
React foam is largely utilized in Nike’s running sneakers and is pretty comparable to adidas’s famous Boost material. It’s a cushy material that feels like walking on a pillow without sacrificing the necessary support for runners. In the 270 React it’s a bit more of an aesthetic addition than a functional one but still provides that same comfort, only this time in a lifestyle shoe. It also really maxes out the chunkiness of the shoe, making for an eye-catching pair of kicks that’s also accessible, affordable and comes in a wide array of colors.
Nike LeBron 17
We’re cheating a little bit here as full details on the LeBron 17 haven’t been made official yet. Still, between a couple of timely leaks and LeBron James himself sharing a few pictures of the shoes, it seems safe to say that the upcoming LeBron 17 is going to be a must-buy as far as basketball sneakers go.
The shoe bears a striking resemblance to 2017’s LeBron 15, which saw a drastic change in design for the signature sneaker of the biggest star in the NBA. It incorporated a thick but flexible knit material across the shoe’s upper rather than leather and utilized a high top that came up to the ankle. In a design field heavily focused on performance, this felt like a fashion statement.
The LeBron 16 took similar notes from the 15 and it looks like the 17 will be no different. It bears a striking resemblance to the iconic 15 with a few notable changes. The standout is the inclusion of an Air Max 270 bubble across the shoe’s sole, a first in the company’s basketball line. There’s also a noticeably thicker, wider tongue on the shoe. The upper, comprised of a textured knit material, bears a unique array of markings as well. So far we’ve seen a crisp black and gray colorway, and gray option as well as a bright purple style via James’ Instagram account.
Right now details on release date and price aren’t available (though it’s rumored to drop October 3) but expect them before the end of the month — just in time for basketball season to jump off.
Adidas Harden Vol. 4
Speaking of basketball season, LeBron isn’t the only athlete with an impressive new signature sneaker dropping for the upcoming season. Longtime Three Stripes representative James Harden of the Houston Rockets recently unveiled his fourth signature shoe under adidas and it’s easily his best yet.
The adidas Harden Vol. 4 was revealed in mid-September by the company. It’s an impressive mid-cut basketball sneaker that looks like something you’d see on the runway and the court alike. The Vol. 4 will feature LIGHTSTRIKE midsole cushioning, an innovation that makes for great on-court performance and premium comfort off of it (it was first utilized in the adidas N3XT L3V3L laceless basketball shoe). The design pairs a curvy, puffy sole with a sleek upper and a large tongue to make for an eye-catching silhouette.
That being said, the real draw with the Vol. 4 is color. It’s going to be the perfect shoe for guys who want to incorporate bright, bombastic accents into their outfits or want their shoes to be the first pair anyone notices in a crowded room. The colorways revealed so far include a bombastic black and white version that incorporates a number of different animal prints as well as the easy highlight – a light-pink edition called the Pink Lemonade. Between the innovative design and the can’t-miss colorways, the Harden Vol. 4 is going to be the perfect sneaker for guys looking to get their footwear game noticed this fall. Keep an eye out — it drops on October 4th.
Nike LDWaffle x sacai
It’s tough to think of a sneaker that caused more buzz over the summer than the LD Waffle Nike produced in collaboration with Japanese brand Sacai. The shoe, a low-cut racer, utilized an off-set layering of texture and color to create a wholly unique and memorable shoe that sneaker fanatics across the globe were coveting before they were even released. Pairs of the shoe have resold for as much as $1,456.
It doesn’t seem like this trend is stopping just because of a change in seasons, either. Nike recently revealed a release date for the next round of Nike LDWaffle x sacai kicks. Recently a collection including black, white and pink and green colorways dropped on the Nike SNKRS app via a draw. You might be in luck if your foot falls on either side of the size spectrum.
Whether you’re trying to tie a killer outfit together with something simple or give a more subdued outfit a burst of color, a great pair of sneakers is the key. It can make jeans and a tee shirt look like a Fashion Week ensemble or make for the perfect finishing touch on a first date or job interview look. Whatever your preference may be, this season’s sneaker lineup has you covered.
