For many of us, the easiest way to kickstart that “new year, new you” feeling is to give our wardrobe a quick upgrade, be it in the form of a clothing purge, picking up some new pieces for our wardrobe lineups or even a little bit of both. It’s a great time to take stock of what’s currently in your closet or dresser and think not only about what you need to survive the chilly winter months ahead but also what your sartorial needs over the next year will be. There are few better ways to lock these down than with the right pair of sneakers.

Whether you’re looking to upgrade your fitness game or just need a clean, crisp new pair of white kicks for everyday wear, the beginning of the year is a great time to lock down your footwear game and flesh out your wardrobe with the right sneakers.

Best New Sneaker for Running

Nike Epic React Infinity Run

Nike Epic React Infinity Run

Whether your New Year’s resolution is to run more or you’ve been at it for years, the last thing anybody wants is to have their goals derailed by an injury. They’ve long been an inevitable part of the fitness game, but Nike’s latest running shoe doesn’t just aim to prevent the likelihood of injury — it’s largely succeeded. The Epic React Infinity Run has been meticulously tested by Nike and they’ve found that its construction and design leads to a 52 percent lower rate of injury than other running shoes in their line.

The shoe features a sole made from Nike’s signature React foam structured to create increased mobility and sturdiness. It’s ultra-lightweight with a wider platform, lending to increased cushioning and stability when hitting the track, road or treadmill. The shoe goes on sale on January 3 for Nike members and has a wide release on January 16. If you have long-term running goals for 2020 and aren’t looking to flame out or injure yourself before January’s over, this sneaker is the way to go.

Best New Sneaker for the Gym

Under Armour Project Rock 2

Under Armour Project Rock 2

Last year’s UA Project Rock 1 was among the best weightlifting shoes we’d encountered. From the durable and balanced flat sole (perfect for heavy lifts) to the supportive ankle guard, it was just about everything you could ask for in a training shoe — short of arch support and treading that would be good for hitting the treadmill for a minute after getting some cross-training done.

For those who missed that versatility in the first silhouette, Under Armour has you covered in their latest addition to the Project Rock line. The Project Rock 2 is a markedly different design from its predecessor, built for a variety of activities in the gym rather than designed with the sole intent of being used for weightlifting.

The shoe features a lower ankle guard and a sole with significant treading and curvature without sacrificing the support and stability needed in a good weightlifting shoe. The sole is balanced, with the heel on the slightly heavier side in order to help keep your feet in place during lifting. Meanwhile the HOVR foam sole (think Under Armour’s answer to Adidas’s BOOST foam or Nike’s REACT material) provides sturdy but comfortable cushioning that works just as well on the track as it does on the gym floor.

While the runners out there may want a lighter and more running-specific shoe for their fitness needs, the Project Rock 2 is perfect for anyone looking to do a little bit of everything at the gym in 2020.

The Best Underrated Upgrade Sneaker

Reebok Question Mid

Reebok Question Mid

While his sneakers were a huge deal during in his time in the NBA, the signature shoes of Allen Iverson have never been quite as universally recognizable as those of guys like Michael Jordan or LeBron James. It’s a shame, as Iverson’s sneaker lineup was always top-notch.

Reebok seems to have realized the time for a resurgence has arrived. Last year as they reissued the Reebok Answer V and dropped a sold-out hit in the Reebok Question Mid ‘Double Cross’ colorway. They’re pushing the shoe in a big way already in 2020, with the flashy red ‘Heart Over Hype’ edition dropping within the first day of the year. But it’s the smooth gray ‘Year of the Rat’ that stands out as an early sneaker-of-the-year contender. The lush grey suede that comprises the shoe’s upper sets off the creamy off-white lower beautifully. It’s a versatile pair of sneakers that will pair well with any number of outfits — plus they’re sure to elicit compliments from anyone who knows even a little something about the sneaker world.

The Best New Colorful Sneaker

Nike Kyrie 6

Nike Kyrie 6

NBA superstar Kyrie Irving’s signature line of sneakers has always skewed on the weird side because, well, Irving is a weird dude. He’s obsessed with cartoons and conspiracy theories and his sneakers have reflected that over the last few years. Kyrie’s shoes never blend in. They always stand out and his latest signature model is no different.

The Kyrie 6 draws heavily in design from the iconic Nike Air Yeezy 2 with its patterned heel and chunky strap. That’s enough to make the shoe stand out as it is, but the shoe has also been released almost exclusively in loud, vibrant colorways since its debut in late 2019. From the Pre-Heat collection to the upcoming collaboration with Concepts, the Kyrie 6 is the perfect shoe for anyone who wants their sneakers to be the centerpiece of their outfits, for those who aren’t afraid of adding a sizable burst of color to a look.

It doesn’t hurt that they’re about as comfortable as a pair of sneakers comes — though be sure to go half a size up as this one runs a bit small.
